Dilatation & Curettage [D&C] What is a D&C?
Is it painful?
When is a D&C done?
Does it require admission?
How long will I bleed after a D&C?
What should I look for after the procedure?
If you have any of the above please contact your doctor immediately. Hysteroscopy and endometrial sampling Nowadays it is rare for a D&C to be done alone [usually only for incomplete or missed abortions]. It is usually combined with a procedure known as a hysteroscopy. This is because it is conclusively proven that a D&C [which is really a "blind" procedure] even in the best of hands gets only about 50% of the lining of the uterus while there may be a disease in the remaining portion which has been missed. A hysteroscopy allows the gynaecologist to view the inside of the uterus and take a biopsy from the area which is worst affected and to localize the area and extent of the disease too.
