Dilatation & Curettage [D&C]

What is a D&C?

• D&C stands for ‘Dilatation & Curettage'. It is a procedure by which the cervix [mouth of the uterus] is gently dilated and the contents of the uterus are sampled and if required sent for a biopsy.

Is it painful?

• No, it is generally done under general anaesthesia and is quite painless other than the injection that you will get in your hand.

When is a D&C done?

• You will be advised a D&C if you have heavy period [Menorrhagia], or frequent heavy periods [Polymenorrhagia], or if you have bleeding after your menopause.

Does it require admission?

• Yes for about 4-5 hours. This is usually called day care surgery as it does not require an over night stay at the hospital.

How long will I bleed after a D&C?

• You will have bleeding for between 3-5 days following a D&C

What should I look for after the procedure?

• Heavy bleeding

• Pain

• Fever

• Foul smelling discharge

• Giddiness

• Urinary problems

Hysteroscopy and endometrial sampling

Nowadays it is rare for a D&C to be done alone [usually only for incomplete or missed abortions].  It is usually combined with a procedure known as a hysteroscopy. This is because it is conclusively proven that a D&C [which is really a "blind" procedure] even in the best of hands gets only about 50% of the lining of the uterus while there may be a disease in the remaining portion which has been missed.

A hysteroscopy allows the gynaecologist to view the inside of the uterus and take a biopsy from the area which is worst affected and to localize the area and extent of the disease too.
